The club was founded in 1880 as St. Mark's (West Gorton) before changing its name to Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887. In 1894, the club was renamed Manchester City Football Club.
In its early years, Manchester City was a relatively successful club, winning the FA Cup in 1904 and finishing as runners-up in the competition on three other occasions. However, the club struggled to establish itself as a consistent force in English football, and in the years that followed, it experienced several ups and downs.

In the 1960s, Manchester City experienced a period of success under the management of Joe Mercer and the captaincy of Bert Trautmann. The team won the FA Cup in 1969 and the League Championship in 1968 and reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1970.
